Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Valhalla, New York, is the state’s only independent specialty children’s hospital, dedicated exclusively to caring for medically fragile children. The hospital treats some of the most complex pediatric cases—children recovering from traumatic brain injuries, chronic illnesses, and major surgeries, as well as those dependent on ventilators or requiring intensive rehabilitation.
Working closely with the hospital’s therapist, Vision Project arranged for small digital cameras to be donated to the hospital. Vision Project then oversaw a program to teach the children how to use the cameras and work in Photoshop. The goal was to give them to a group of children who would enjoy taking pictures and let them create their own photographic journal. Many of the children loved the opportunity as they roamed about the hospital in their wheelchairs, capturing their daily world with photographs. The hospital’s therapist found the experience to be highly beneficial to the children’s development and healing, as well as a great deal of fun. |
