| WORKSHOPS - STUDY ABROAD

Vision Project is pleased to announce a study abroad workshop in photography. |

This opportunity will enable students to explore the culture, place and people using digital photography. The course is designed to help students develop the skills, discipline and insights necessary to create documentary productions. At the same time, participants will submerse themselves in India’s past and present culture by visiting a variety of Indian cites such as Delhi, Varanasi, Agra, and Jaipur. We could not create a better situation for the student to begin to understand the workings of a real documentary assignment.
The program will be run in a way similar to that of any major professional news organizations working on an assignment. Focus is placed on making strong visual images and developing photo essays. Emphasis will be placed on the ‘process’ of creating documentary work. This will encompass everything from preparation, gathering information, equipment, shooting the pictures, the importance of editing and learning to think on your feet. There will be daily assignments in addition to individual projects determined by the student. At the end of every day there will be a critique & discussion about the day’s work. As a class, the collective goal will be to create a comprehensive portrait of areas we visit.
You do not need to be a student at Sacred Heart University in order to participate in the program.

Delhi is India’s capital and is a product of over 5000 years of history. With nearly 16 million residents, it is the eight largest metropolis in the world! Students will visit the Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb, the Gandhi Memorial at Raj Ghat, and Parliament Street
Varanasi, also known as the “The Holy City” is situated on the banks of the river Ganges and is one of the oldest living cities in the world, as well as the oldest city in India. Students will tour the ancient temples and visit the ancient seat of Sarnath and Bharath.
Agra is home to the amazing Taj Mahal, a world wonder and World Heritage Site. Students will see the Taj Majal and get a chance to tour the city
Jaipur, often referred to as the “eternal pink city”, is enclosed within the rolling hills of India. In 1876 the entire city was painted pink for the visit of Edward VII, and now every home is required by law to maintain this pink façade. Students will explore the Amber Fort and the Govind Devji Temple
Udaipur, situated in the forested hilly region of the Aravelli Ranges. Also called the “Lake City,” Udaipur houses the City Palace, temples, and forts. |

For the past thirty years he has worked as a photographer, filmmaker, and journalist. He has had assignments on four continents in over thirty-five countries and has worked for many major magazines, including: Life Magazine, Newsweek, Geo, Time, New York Times, US News & World Report, to name a few. There are two published books of Mr. Falco’s work: Medics: A Documentation of Paramedics in the Harlem Community and To Bear Witness/ September 11. He is the director of two films, Crossroads: Rural Health Care In America and Holding Back The Surge. Mr. Falco also has twenty-five years of teaching experience. He has taught and lectured at a number of universities and institutions; notably, The New School for Social Research; the State University of New York at Purchase College, the School of Visual Arts, the New York Film Academy and Sacred Heart University. He is also the director of all of Vision Project’s educational programming. |

ACCOMMODATIONS
Students will stay in various shared hotel rooms throughout their stay in India. Breakfast is included. |

PROGRAM COSTS
In summary, the following is included in your program fees:
• Tuition (3 credits)
• Course instruction with Professor Falco
• HTH International Insurance
• 14 nights in India: all hotel stays with breakfast
• All internal flights (Delhi-Varanasi, Varanasi-Delhi, and Udaipur-Delhi) on economy class
• An air conditioned mini coach with driver throughout your travel in Delhi, Varanasi, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, and Delhi
• All airport and hotel transfers in India
• An English speaking tour guide in Delhi, Varanasi, Agra, Jaipur, and Udaipur
• Cycle rickshaw ride in Delhi and Sunset ride in Jaipur
• All entrance fees and activities when accompanied by local tour guide
• Orientation and support at Sacred Heart and in India
*Note: Students are responsible for additional costs associated with international airfare to India, lunch/dinner and personal expenses. It is assumed that students will already have a digital camera, laptop and software; therefore these are not listed on the budget worksheet. |

VISA
A visa is a legal stamp on your passport granted by the Indian Consulate which allows you to legally visit India. All students should have a valid (for at least 6 months after program-end date) and signed passport at the time of submitting the study abroad application. The decision whether or not to issue a visa is solely up to the Indian government, not SHU. The student is responsible for obtaining the correct information and documentation and for applying for and obtaining the appropriate visa, but the Office of Study Abroad will support admitted students with this process. GROUP FLIGHT
In an effort to keep the group together, a group flight will be organized. Once program participation is confirmed, SHU will get quotes from airline providers and will attempt to keep costs as low as possible, but students should budget for $2000. The flight would leave from the New York (or surrounding) area and students would meet at the airport and all fly together. More flight details/instructions will be provided to all admitted students. |
